I asked a group of people to suggest thank you gifts for every budget. They offered some great ideas for gifts that fit in four different categories: under $10, between $15 and $50, $50-100, and above $100.
The suggestions for thank you gifts for under $10 include: a box of candy, a pot of herbs, a book of stamps, current magazines the receiver would enjoy, good coffee or teas, a card, a paperback novel, a potted plant, a nice gel pen or a thank you card with 10 lottery tickets inside.
A paperback book was a popular suggestion, however being an avid reader, a book is one gift that I would not want to receive. I have never received a book as a gift that was something I was interested in reading. So only give a book as a thank you gift when you are very sure of the person’s reading tastes.
Easy thank you gifts for between $15 and $50 are gift certificates for a manicure or pedicure, or a local restaurant, or a car wash. Something a little more personal might be a bottle of wine, a set of neutral colored bath towels, gift basket of gourmet food or a bouquet of seasonal flowers,
The most popular suggestion for thank you gifts for $50 to $100 was a visit to the spa, including a massage. Cufflinks were suggested, but you would want to make sure that the recipient uses cufflinks, otherwise they’ll sit in the drawer or be regifted. Tickets to a sport or theatre event or concert make excellent thank you gifts, as do scotch, jewelry and wine & cheese gift baskets.
When it comes to the really big thank you gifts, those over $100 the sky really is the limit. On the lower end the suggestions ranged from a nice set of coffee table books, to a night in a country inn or city hotel, a nice linen set or a bottle of good Scotch or Brandy. On the higher end of thank you gifts over $100, the ideas were to give a first edition book, a laptop computer or a nice piece of original artwork. For those to whom cost is not a factor a really nice thank you gift might be several ounces of gold, all-expense paid vacation to some exotic local, or even a car.
Just remember that the reason for giving a thank you gift is to express your appreciation for an act of thoughtfulness by another person. Therefore, it’s the thought that really counts, and not how much you spent, and there really are thank you gifts for every budget.
