Online Degree Discipline

Article id: 175 Author: Charity Weber Submit date: February 04, 2008 Views: 220

Disciplining yourself when working on an online college degree is vital to you finishing that degree. Here are a couple tips to help you when considering whether or not you can complete an entirely online virtual degree from home:

1. Make sure you are self-motivated. Only those individuals that are self-disciplined can survive an online class. You will not have someone looking over you shoulder asking you to come to class or to turn in an assignment. You may be lucky enough to get an online instructor who might email you, but don't expect personal phone calls to make sure you are on track. You have to maintain all the responsibility. Some people just do not have that personality trait. Know whether you do or not.

2. Write down al assignments, chats, discussion postings, readings due and more on a calendar. Then break those items into smaller chunks and add the chunks to the calendar. By placing large items into doable units, you are less likely to become overwhelmed at one time by the amount of work to be completed. Usually (though not always), online degrees tend to be weighted on the heavier side of the workload compared to in-ground classes. Since you are typically not spending a specific weekly class time, they have to justify that time by giving enough work to compensate.

3. Set up a place at your home to work on "school." Use this space for your studying and research. The least amount of distractions the better. Make sure your family or significant others know that when you are working on school, you should not be disturbed. Sometimes this is the hardest lesson to enforce to others who might think you are still easily accessible. Leave the house or work when everyone is sleeping, if necessary. Just make sure to get it done.

If you can set aside the time and continue to work on your own, your well-deserved degree (and the knowledge that goes along with it), will be at your fingertips before you know it!
